About the image...

Young planters

The photograph, made for a Greening Australia publication, was taken during a Greening Australia revegetation day in North Sydney.

Greening Australia implemented the federal government's Billion Trees programme that attempted to replant and restore natural environments. The programme attracted public partication in city and country. Environmental lobbyists said that during the Billion Trees programme as many trees were destroyed as were planted throughout the country because of uncontrolled land clearing.

Thousands of volunteers planted hundreds of thousands of native trees and shrubs through Greening Australia projects and the National Landcare Programme.
