About the image...

Manly through the window

A summer's day at Sydney's popular Manly beach seen through the window of a historic shelter shed.

The tree trunk in the picture belongs to a Norfolk Island pine, a member of the Aracauria family of trees, not the pines. Manly's Norfolk Island pines are regarded as heritage items but only 15 years ago they were threatened with disease, the result of sea spray contaminated with detergent and sewage dumped offshore by a dysfunctional waste water system. The introduction of alternative waste water management saved the trees that extend the full length of the Manly seashore. Up to ten million people visit Manly each year.

The image was made by exposing for a spot metre reading of the sunlit scene outside the shed.
