About the image...
Winter's afternoon sun
The late afternoon sun of winter casts long, soft shadows on Manly's Shelley Beach as visitors make the most of the fading light.
Shelley Beach is the only one in the area with a northerly aspect - all other beaches face east, into the Pacific. The beach, just a twenty minute walk from the centre of Manly, is popular in summer but less so in winter.
The image was made against the light by metering off the sunlit sand in the middle distance and shooting from the shade of the tree to avoid lens flare.
