North Coast under cloud
Dark clouds create a sombre ambience.
Mt Warning is the prominent peak in the far distance. So-named by Captain James Cook on his exploration of the Australian East Coast in 1770 because it dominates the coast and warns of landfall, the peak is an ancient volcanic plug and centrepiece of a vast volcanic caldera.
The twin peaks behind the coastline at right rise above the town of Mullumbimby. The beach extends for kilometres north from Byron Bay towards the Queensland border.
